Extant: Issue List

Extant succeeded Cosmopolis as the VIE’s newsletter after the main project’s 2006 close, continuing under Paul Rhoads’ editorship with VIE project updates, essays, and (increasingly, as the project wound down) general Vance-related and off-topic material. It ran for 23 issues, March 2005–January 2008 (see VIE.md and the vance-research skill’s references/vie-project-history.md for the surrounding project history).

Methodology and sourcing

As with Cosmopolis.md, the title given for each issue is the heading of its own lead (“page 1”) item, read from the issue’s own masthead and contents page. Dates and issue numbers are as printed on each issue’s own masthead; these agree with the publication dates given on the Foreverness/integralarchive.org download index. All 23 issues, plus an alternate “uncensored” printing of #12, were downloaded from integralarchive.org (cosmo/Extant-NN.pdf) into Extant/ and converted to plain text (pdftotext -layout) into Extant/text/. Issue #12 has two versions: the standard printing and a separate uncensored printing, both retrieved; the difference between the two has not yet been examined. Issue #11: the copy served at integralarchive.org/cosmo/Extant-11.pdf is internally malformed at the source (confirmed identical, and equally corrupt, on both the live site and a January 2025 Wayback Machine snapshot; qpdf’s structural repair failed too — its page tree is missing entirely, not just its xref table). A working copy was found at the mirror vanderveeke.net/foreverness/cosmo/Extant-11.pdf and used instead.

Notes

  • Extant was preceded by Cosmopolis (63 issues, January 2000–July 2005); see Cosmopolis.md.
  • Issue #23 is confirmed as the last issue: it documents the VIE corporation’s Certificate of Dissolution and was explicitly framed as a final “reprieve” after #22 had already been intended as the close.
